In the past months, more than 100,000 Sri Lankans have been displaced from their homes in the violence-riddled north-east. "Every day, families are arriving at the IDP camps in Vavuniya. They have not eaten for weeks and are in poor condition. Most of them only have the clothes on their backs," says Thamil Thanabalasundaram, Sewalanka Foundation's North Regional Director. "Until last week, the government and NGO sector were catering to 70,000 IDPs but last week nearly 60,000 people arrived. Everyone is trying their best, but feeding 130,000 people three times a day is a huge task."

Sewalanka Foundation is multiplying its emergency response efforts to this crisis. We need your support today to meet the ballooning demand for food, shelter, non-food relief items and water at the IDP camps.

Even the smallest donation goes a long way:

- A US$150 donation covers the clean water needs (hygiene, cooking, cleaning, hydration) for a family of four for one week.

- A US$50 donation provides new clothing for a family of 4-6 people.

- With a US$25 donation, you feed an IDP for an entire week.

- US$10 provides clean drinking water for one person for more than a week.

We appreciate the support you have shown for Sewalanka's work in the past and we are asking you to contribute again to this emergency relief effort. Sewalanka is on the ground working directly with the individuals affected by this crisis. Your funds will make it possible to address a most urgent need and have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of families. Thank you.

*Update* May 3, 2009 - Sewalanka staff donate two-and-a-half trucks' worth of supplies for IDP response (water bottles, milk powder, topical medicines, biscuits, etc.) Emergency team packaged the materials into 140 sets for children and 860 for elderly IDPs. Estimates are that 100,000 more IDPs will arrive in the next three days.
