Sri Lanka continues to face a multi dimensional crisis compounded by food insecurity, threatened livelihoods as well as rising protection concerns. A majority of the population is struggling to meet their daily food needs in the face of shortages and high food prices According to WFP's latest Food Security Survey. 33 percent of households were facing acute food insecurity in December 2022. Sixty eight percent of the households are turning to food based coping strategies such as limiting portions and reducing the number of meals to put food on the table.
According to the Colombo Price Index (Y o Y) decreased to 60.1 percent in January 2023 from 64.4 percent in December 2022. Markets are functional, however spikes and instability in prices continue to pose threats to market functionality in Sri Lanka. In December, Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces had the highest percentage of households that are food insecure with an average of 41 percent.
