A disaster situation has been declared in the Nuwara Eliya District, District Disaster Management Coordinator Erandana Hemawardana told news.lk today.
He said there is a risk of landslides at several locations due to the torrential rains. He said he has advised the people in the area to remain vigilant.
180 persons belonging to 63 families have been displaced. An earth-slip has occurred at Tawalamthenna on the Pudaluoya-Nuwara Eliya road. The earth is currently being removed.
He further said the water levels of the Laxapana Reservoir have surged. The District Disaster Management Centre declared that sluice gats will be opened, if necessary.
It said that the people living in the lower Laxapana area face a higher risk.
