Sri Lanka: Chinese government donates 3.3 million for flood relief operations

The People's Republic of China has donated 30,000 USD to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to support its flood relief programme.

The donation was made by the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Her Excellency Yang Xiuping in Colombo today. (19th January 2011).

In a communiqué the Chinese Embassy in Colombo said "The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) is very sad to learn that the recent floods in several districts of Sri Lanka have caused tragic loss of life and extensive damage to property, and has decided to donate thirty thousand US dollars (3.3 million LKR) to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to support relief efforts"

While appreciating the work done by the SLRCS in flood relief operations the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka continued to assured its support and corporation for future activities of the movement.

Meanwhile the Director General of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Tissa Abeywickrama in a letter to the Chinese Ambassador thanked the Government of China and the Chinese Red Cross Society for its support for relief operations.

Furthermore the Director General said that the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society will continue to help the most vulnerable in Sri Lanka during times of disasters and crisis.

Meanwhile the Head of Services of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Colonel Sudath Madugalle was present at the Chinese embassy in Colombo to accept the donation by the Ambassador herself.
