Rebuilding social ties within fractured communities

VAVUNIYA [ACTED News] -- Since the end of the war in May 2009, 370,000 displaced persons have so far returned home. The communities they return to are often but names on a map, as years of war and displacement have not only caused severe material damage, but also deep fractures within their social fabric. Cash-for-Work, which ACTED provided to 3,500 returnee households with funding from USAID, can help rebuild social ties between individuals who experienced years of trauma and isolation. By bringing people together through common labour and shared meal breaks, Cash-for-Work facilitates renewed discussion and dialogue, allowing participants to forget individual grievances while recreating a long-lost sense of community.
