Mr. Yasushi Akashi, Representative of the Government of Japan on Peace Building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Sri Lanka, to attend the Meeting of the Four Co-chairs of the Tokyo Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka

  1. Mr. Yasushi Akashi, Representative of the Government of Japan on Peace Building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Sri Lanka, will visit Belgium from September 11 (Mon) to 13 (Wed) to attend the Meeting of the Four Co-chairs of the Tokyo Conference on the Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka, to be held on September 12 (Tue) in Brussels.

2. Attending the meeting will be Mr. Yasushi Akashi, Representative of the Government of Japan on Peace Building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Sri Lanka, Mr. Erik Solheim, Norway's Minister of Development Cooperation, and Ms. Benita Ferrero Waldner, Member of the European Commission in charge of External Relations.

3. The Co-chairs' meeting is regularly held among the four countries and organizations that co-chaired the Tokyo Conference in June 2003 to exchange views on the progress of the peace process of Sri Lanka and discuss international assistance. At the forthcoming meeting, the co-chairs will exchange views on the prospects for the peace process in Sri Lanka, taking into account the seriousness of the situation.

4. The meeting, the ninth of its kind, is the first since the Co-chairs met in Tokyo in May of this year.
