Landslide in Haldummulla destroys a row of line houses

A row of line houses in Meeriyabedda, Haldummulla in Badulla District have been destroyed by a landslide which occurred early this morning. Rscue operations are being carried out by the Police, Army and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) with the help of the people.

According to DMC sources at least 120 line houses have been destroyed and members of more than 150 families totalling about 500 who were living in that area are believed to be trapped.

A Bell 212 rescue helicopter to has been deployed in the rescue operations.

According to Police Spokesperson three bodies have been recovered by the rescue team, so far.(KH)
