Civilian killed in accidental shooting by army in Sri Lanka

Colombo (dpa) - A taxi driver was killed in an accidental shooting when a soldier providing security for a Tamil political party member opened fire at the would-be assassin of both of them in eastern Sri Lanka Thursday, but missed his target, police said.

The civilian killed was identified as Thadchanamoorthy Karunamoorthy, 40, while two others were injured in the incident in Chenkalady, Batticaloa, 240 kilometres east of the capital, police said. The incident occurred when the soldier opened fire at a gunman who shot at a member of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP). Both the soldier and the EPDP member, Tharmaratnam Elamaran Ravi, were injured in the incident. The soldier returned fire, but the would-be assassin escaped. A bystander, a taxi driver, was killed and other civilians were injured, Police said.

Security forces have been forced to provide security to members of rival political parties of the rebels who have stepped up attacks on them. More than 25 rival members have been killed in separate incidents in the north and eastern parts of the country in attacks carried out by the rebels and in retaliatory killings during the past four weeks.
