SRI LANKA
While southwestern areas of the country are experiencing heavy rain, other locations have been in the grip of a drought which has left 770,000 people in need of food, water, and credit/cash assistance according to a multi-sector rapid assessment conducted by the UN, INGOs, and Government. An estimated 280,000 metric tons of paddy harvest were lost and small-scale farmers are facing difficulties repaying the loans they obtained to harvest the rain-fed paddy season in 2013. It is not expected that impact on the drought will ease because of the recent heavy rains.
