KEY MESSAGES

• The food insecurity and malnutrition crisis affecting 5.5 million people and about 100,000 or possibly more facing famine in Leer and Mayendit counties is worsening. The famine is likely to spread to other counties in a country where already one million children are estimated to be acutely malnourished.

• Humanitarian workers must be provided access to the affected populations in the hard to reach areas so that they can stem the spread of famine conditions in the country, and to save the lives of the most vulnerable people, particularly children, the disabled, and the elderly,

• As funding for the humanitarian response in South Sudan decreases, the cost of operating in the country is increasing. World Vision calls on donor countries and other key stakeholders to work with parties to the conflict, to ensure a reduction in the cost of carrying out humanitarian interventions.

• Inflation rose above 900% during the reporting period and the annual food inflation rate was 480% in February 2017. Food prices are likely to rise further in the lean season.

• According to the latest report from OCHA, 1.9 million people are internally displaced while 1.7 million South Sudanese refugees are living in foreign countries. As individuals and families continue to flee, the ability to provide food to the people of South Sudan becomes more and more difficult, especially as food insecurity continues to reach record levels.
