5.5 million people facing severe food insecurity from May to July 2017 (IPC, Feb. 2017)

Highlights

  • WFP conducted a successful test airdrop of Energy Biscuits (HEB), specialized nutritious food as well as water, blankets and medical kits.

  • The total number of beneficiaries receiving food assistance through Cash Based Transfers has reached over 425,000 in April 2017 using various delivery modalities including cash transfers and paper or electronic vouchers.

Situation Update

  • WFP South Sudan for the first time used the so-called sky pack system to airdrop High Energy Biscuits (HEB), ready-to use supplementary food (RUSF) as well as water, blankets and medical kits. The sky pack system is a box without parachute that contains small envelopes with the items. It opens when dropped, letting the same slowly floating to the ground. This will allow WFP to reach beneficiaries on the move without having presence on the ground. The test drops of 768kg of HEBs and RUSF plus the other items in Ganyal, Unity State were 100 per cent successful.

  • At the mid-point of the pilot Juba Urban Cash Programme, WFP and World Vision met to discuss the graduation of the current participants and the continuation of the intervention after August. The programme which includes a training component currently targets 7,000 households (42,000 people). An urban food security and nutrition assessment is to be conducted in the coming weeks to inform the second phase of the intervention.
