The SRSG welcomed the signature of the agreement reached in Addis Ababa on 9 May between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and SSDM/A, and commended David Yau Yau for his role in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Greater Pibor County, Jonglei State. SRSG Johnson reiterated UNMISS’s readiness to support the full implementation of the agreement which “will lay the foundation of a durable peace for all the people and communities of Pibor and surrounding counties”, she commented.

SRSG Johnson offered David Yau Yau the opportunity to brief the diplomatic corps later today in the UNMISS compound about the implementation of the agreement and to convey the need for such support.

The SRSG also wishes to reaffirm the steadfast commitment of UNMISS to the people of South Sudan, and expresses her hope that the Government and the SPLA/In Opposition can follow suit and resolve their differences peacefully, ending a conflict which continues to cause untold suffering to the people of South Sudan.
