Highlights

  • During a rapid response mission to Gorwai in Jonglei State (see photo above), 4,481 children were screened for malnutrition, out of whom 181 children (4.0 per cent) were suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and 693 (15.5 per cent) were found with moderate acute malnutrition. The findings indicated a critical nutrition situation among the displaced population in the area. Together with implementing partner COSV, an outpatient therapeutic programme (OTP) centre was established for children with SAM, including a facility structure, supplies and capacity building for staff.

  • Bentiu Protection of Civilian (PoC) site was severely affected by flooding last week. Most of the PoC area is submerged, affecting 600 households.
Two out of five OTP centres were seriously affected; the affected OTPs were relocated to safe areas and beneficiaries informed accordingly.

  • To date, UNICEF and partners have reached 56,654 children and adolescents with essential child protection services, including psychosocial support, case management and referrals. A majority of these children continue to receive ongoing services, with psychosocial support being provided to 42,504 children during the last week. UNICEF and partners operate at least two child friendly spaces in each PoC, with some operating outside PoCs as well.
