Humanitarian logisticians work around the clock to move critical relief items in often complex and challenging environments. To ensure this is accomplished in a timely and cost-efficient way, professional skills in warehouse management and cargo handling are required.
With the Level 3 emergency operation in full swing across South Sudan, field staff must be equipped to serve the response with competence and expertise. For this purpose, the Logistics Cluster and RedR UK recently held six Field Logistics Emergency (FLE) trainings aimed at strengthening the response capacity of logistics staff.
The training sessions were attended by 124 participants from INGOs, national NGOs, and UN organisations. Through classroom-based learning, as well as practical applications, participants became familiar with logistics documentation, inventory control, weight and volume calculation. Furthermore, participants were introduced to need assessment tools and procedures, which will help them identifying the most needed items for the response.
The training was generously supported by IOM that provided the site, including two Mobile Storage Units for the practical sessions.
Since the beginning of the year the Logistics Cluster in South Sudan has trained 246 people from 24 organisations throughout the country.
A special thanks goes to USAID, UKAID and ECHO for funding these trainings.
