South Sudan - Rumbek East Lakes State: IRNA Report - Flood Assessment - September 2021

Attachments

Rumbek East has experienced unprecedented floods again this year following the heavy rains. The situation that began as water logging in the farmlands, slowly deteriorated into large volumes of water that have had devastating effects on the livelihoods of communities in the Payams of Atiaba, Akot, Paloc, Mathiang, Pacong, Cueicok and Aduel in Rumbek East County.

In a meeting amongst the inter cluster partners, an overview of Rumbek East was taken. The flood has entirely affected most of the County. The number of affected villages were very many and given the limited time and human resources the agencies had at their disposal; it was agreed to come up with a smaller sample of villages in the affected Payam.

The team visited villages and humanitarian staff walked around and had a first-hand observation of the extent of the damage to homes and food crops caused by the floods. Focus Group Discussions were held with men and women together in groups. Key informant interviews were conducted to get in-depth technical knowledge on the onset of flooding through its diverse impacts and local mitigation measures.
