Situation overview
Riverine floods have had a devastating effect on the vulnerable communities of Old Fangak. The flooding has disrupted people’s livelihoods thereby creating a dire humanitarian situation. The local authorities of Old Fangak through the ROSS appealed to humanitarian agencies working in Old Fangak as well as UNOCHA for urgent humanitarian assistance. In 2020, heavy rains resulted in massive flooding and also caused the water level in rivers to rise to unprecedented levels even during the dry season. The rising water level has resulted in riverine flooding where most villages along the river have been completely submerged. The flooding also affected people’s fields rendering all the crops a right off such that the majority of Old Fangak communities harvested nothing in 2020. The communities of Old Fangak are agro pastoralists such that weather related hazards such as flooding impact heavily on their livelihoods.
Humanitarian agencies in Old Fangak responded to calls from the Old Fangak local authorities through conducting a spot-on check assessment to determine the effect of the flooding on the communities of Old Fangak and New Fangak. The inter-agency Spot-Check assessment was organized and conducted on January 29th to 30th 2021, the first day was carried out in villages around Old Fangak and the second day the assessment was done along the Phow river. Local authorities had estimated the number of affected and displaced households to be 7,357 comprised of 44,472 individuals.
