Malek Village of Kolnyang Boma in Kolnyang Payam of Bor South has been hosting IDPs who fled the conflict in Gemeiza payam of Terekeka county in Central Equatoria since 2017.
The IDPs upon their arrival were allocated the school (Malek Academy – secondary school) to use temporarily as their sheltering place since there were existing shelters around. Over the period, the IDPs have continued to stay in the area for the long as the situation in the area continue to be unpredictable.
Starting from January 2022, the community and school administration asked the IDPs to move out of the school to renovated and open the school for learning.
Part of the solution provided by the host community leadership was to allocate a new land where if needed, the IDPs would resettle there.
The land is near the school and within the secure vicinity of the village. As such, the IDPs approached RRC for the solution to their situation in regard to new land and the fact that, they have not yet decided to go back although few have gone so far.
RRC being the convener of state taskforce together with UNHCR brought this to the attention of the taskforce which recommended the intention assessment due to time limitation to understand the main perceptions and proposals for solutions from the IDPs including what they would require if they were to move to the new land allocated by the host community so that humanitarian would find suitable ways to support the IDPs solutions.
The intention assessment undertaken led by UNHCR, OCHA and RRC state and county with the partners (HDC, ACTED and NRC) to mainly listen from the IDPs sampling the households to understand their perceptions and proposed options regarding solutions.
The methodologies used during the assessment were households’ interviews, focus groups discussions and key informant interviews with selected leaders to understand the overall intentions and perceptions of the population including most preferred solutions as the schools evicts the IDPs out. There were conducted four focus group discussions with women, girls, adult men and community leaders.
