KEY FINDINGS
• Between January and February 2026, the median cost of the Multi-Sector Survival Minimum Expenditure Basket (MSSMEB) decreased by 3%, while the food basket increased by 3%. The decline in MSSMEB costs was primarily driven by a substantial reduction in milling costs (47%). Conversely, the increase in the food basket was mainly driven by rising prices of essential food commodities, including salt (12%), beans (11%), and sorghum grain (8%).
• In February 2026, the highest MSSMEB prices were recorded in Bentiu IDP Camp (Rubkona County), Renk Town (Renk County), Akobo (Akobo County), and Panyikang (Panyikang County).
• Between January and February 2026, MSSMEB and food basket costs increased sharply across several locations: In Bentiu IDP Camp, MSSMEB and food basket costs rose by 43% and 40%, respectively. In Renk Town, the MSSMEB increased by 42 %, while the food basket rose by78%. In Panyikang, the MSSMEB increased by 31% and the food basket by 38%. In Rumbek Town, MSSMEB and food basket costs increased by 30% and 35%, respectively
• Traders in the assessed locations reported closures of several key roads due to poor road conditions, including Bor to Akobo (Akobo County), Lankien to waat (Nyirol County), Dukpadiet to Waat, and Pibor to Akobo, potentially contributing to the observed price increases in some areas.
• During the February JMMI, traders reported that market stability and price reductions continued to be constrained mainly by the depreciation of the South Sudanese Pound (43%), high taxation (33%), poor road conditions (32%), high fuel prices (27%), insecurity (23%), and movement restrictions (23%).
