Attachments

In September, flooding has affected more than 755,000 people across 41 of South Sudan’s 78 counties and the Abyei Administrative Area, with communities facing a critical situation compounded by existing food insecurity, conflict, economic deterioration and disease outbreaks. By the end of the month, over 198,000 people were flood-displaced in five states and Abyei. As of September, over 821,300 people have crossed into South Sudan from Sudan since conflict started in April 2023.(1) The number of daily arrivals has declined, averaging between 600 and 700 people. Intercommunal violence reportedly killed several people, displaced over 10,000 people and affected humanitarian assistance in Tonj East County of Warrap State. On 28 September, fighting erupted between conflicting communities in Tonj North County, forcing an unconfirmed number of people to flee and killing several people according to the authorities. Hostilities involving armed groups continued in Yei and Morobo counties of Central Equatoria State, resulting in civilian abduction and limiting people’s access to basic services. An international organization suspended health activities in Yei, following abduction of its staff members. During the month, the cost of living in South Sudan continued to surge. According to WFP market price monitoring, the price of a kilogram of beans increased by 18 per cent between August and September, while the price of 3.5 kg of sorghum increased by 7 per cent during the same period.(2) From January to September, the South Sudanese pound depreciated by 65 per cent relative to the US dollar.(3) As the rainy season intensified in the country, an increase of malaria cases continued, causing morbidity and fatalities, especially among children.
