In February, local currency depreciation aggravated food prices and placed an extra burden on people, many of whom were already acutely food insecure. Some 5.78 million people are projected to be at risk of experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity between December 2023 and March 2024. Food prices increased over 19 per cent, compared to January. As of 29 February, 584,937 people have crossed into South Sudan from Sudan since 15 April 2023. Some 43,988 people arrived in February, recording 1,517 average daily arrivals. People arriving were in need of clean water, food, shelter and health care. Overcrowding and unhygienic living conditions were reported in Bulukat and Renk transit centres in Upper Nile State.
Rapid assessment in Abyei area found nearly 20,000 people displaced and widespread abduction of women, sexual assault, and destruction of public facilities, shelters and livelihood sources during armed attacks. Clashes between armed factions killed civilians, displaced an estimated 10,000 people and disrupted food distribution to vulnerable people in Nasir County, Upper Nile. In Western Bahr el Ghazal, intercommunal violence in Tharkueng, Jur River County, killed dozens of people and displaced the entire population of nearly 20,000 people to neighbouring villages. Some 12,500 people were displaced to Wonduruba and Lainya towns following attacks by armed men in Moje boma, Juba County, Central Equatoria State. Vaccine-derived polio case was confirmed in Juba County, Central Equatoria State. As of 29 February, at least three confirmed and 75 suspected cases of yellow fever were reported in Yambio, Tambura, Nzara, Ezo, Ibba and Maridi counties. Hepatitis E outbreak was reported in Twic County of Warrap State.
