Situation Update
From January to March 2024, an estimated 2.2 million people, including women, girls, boys, and men, in South Sudan were reached with humanitarian assistance and protection services. This represents nearly 37 per cent of the 5.9 million people targeted through the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP). Of those, 1.2 million were female, and 1 million were male.
Response achievements include about 1.6 million people receiving food assistance, livelihoods support, and cash transfers; nearly 420,000 people reached with healthcare; approximately 167,000 assisted with protection services; and about 321,000 people supported with access to safe water. About 250,000 children, and pregnant and breastfeeding women, were provided with emergency nutritional assistance. An estimated 127,000 people received essential household items and emergency shelter.
More than 10,633 metric tons of humanitarian cargo were transported, along with over 16,880 UNHAS passengers. About 740,000 people were reached through camp coordination and camp management services, and over 68,000 children received support with access to education in emergencies. Despite lower-than-expected funding in the first quarter, some clusters utilized carry-over funding from the 2023 HRP to reach people with critical assistance and services.
As of March, 170 humanitarian organizations contributed to these achievements, with 55 per cent being South Sudanese non-governmental organizations. As of end of May, the HRP had secured US $304 million, or 17 per cent of the requested $1.8 billion, with the United States of America, European Commission and Sweden being the top donors.
