Situation Overview

October marked two significant responses for humanitarian organizations. At the beginning of the month, humanitarian partners accessed Lirangu, about 24 km north of Yambio, Western Equatoria, to assess the needs of the 4,000 displaced people there. Lirangu had not been reached by aid workers since 2016. In Upper Nile, a river convoy carrying food aid reached Ulang County for the first time since December 2013. The boats transported 750 metric tons of food and nutrition supplies that were distributed to 40,000 people for one month. They took one week to reach Ulang County from Renk. A general food distribution was completed in Northern Bahr el Ghazal. Almost 520,000 people were reached with 10,500 metric tons of food. Health partners reported increased malaria cases in Magwi region, Eastern Equatoria, due to heavy rain and are scaling up health activities in the area. The Ministry of Health has successfully conducted its first ever diagnostic test for Ebola using the emergency management and laboratory infrastructure developed as part of the Ebola Virus Disease emergency preparedness.

Humanitarian partners have provided life-saving assistance and protection to some 4.7 million people across the country. This represents 78 per cent of the 6.0 million people targeted in 2018. The assistance provided includes: over 4.3 million people reached by food assistance and emergency livelihoods support; more than 1.1 million people provided with access to improved water sources; nearly 700,000 people assisted with vital non-food items and emergency shelter, including blankets and mosquito nets; over 720,000 children and pregnant and lactating mothers provided with emergency nutritional assistance; about 640,000 children provided with access to education in emergencies; over 1.7 million people who received health care services; and nearly 3.4 million people who received services related to gender-based violence, child protection, mine awareness education and general protection services.
