SITUATION OVERVIEW
In July, the humanitarian situation in South Sudan continued to deteriorate. Fighting between armed actors in parts of Greater Equatoria and Upper Nile drove further population displacement. The number of people displaced was 3.9 million, comprising nearly 1.9 million who were internally displaced and nearly 2 million who have ed as refugees to neighbouring countries. An outbreak of fall armyworm was also reported in July. Experts warned that the crop-eating caterpillars, reported in Magwi (Eastern Equatoria), Yei, and Juba (Central Equatoria), Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Jonglei, may further damage South Sudanese farming, exacerbating the country’s food crisis.
Humanitarian partners have provided assistance and protection to about 3.8 million people across South Sudan, out of the 5.8 million targeted in 2017. This includes: 3.7 million reached with food assistance; more than 2.8 million with emergency livelihoods; more than 1.3 million provided with access to clean water; nearly 697,600 assisted with vital non-food items, including blankets and mosquito nets; more than 452,300 children and pregnant and lactating women provided with emergency nutritional assistance; more than 277,300 children supported with access to education in emergencies; and more than 1.5 million children vaccinated against measles.
