SITUATION UPDATE

As of 13 November, flooding has affected 1.35 million people across 39 counties in eight states, displacing nearly 375,600 people, many sheltering on higher ground with livestock. Jonglei, Unity and Lakes are the most affected states. Local sources indicate that some displaced families have begun returning home, but figures are yet to be verified by partners. Floods have destroyed crops, submerged infrastructure and forced families to rely on unsafe water, increasing risks of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and hepatitis E virus, as well as malaria and snakebites. Poor sanitation and limited access to clean water, especially for children and pregnant women, exacerbate vulnerabilities. Schools and health facilities have lost essential supplies and are damaged or covered in mud, preventing the resumption of classes or ability to provide health services. Livelihoods have been severely impacted, with crop fields flooded and pastures swept away, reducing prospects for recovery. An inter-agency assessment in Lakes State from 6 to 27 October reported 298,000 people affected by floods in Cueibet, Rumbek North, Yirol East, Awerial, Yirol West, Wulu, Rumbek East and Rumbek Centre counties. In Jonglei State, authorities have requested partners to assess needs of over 5,000 people affected by floods due to River Nile overflow in Bor South County. Although some waters have receded and families are returning, many find homes destroyed and basic services lacking. Record water levels and prolonged flooding in northern Jonglei and southern Unity have stretched coping mechanisms. Humanitarian partners continue providing life-saving assistance while planning early recovery interventions for the most vulnerable. A coordinated humanitarian response is urgently required.
