Situation overview

Since 2020, flooding in Fashoda County has affected many areas in the County and of late, it has been observed to have started increasing in the river and swamp/tributaries along the River Nile even in some place where the water scarcity has been challenging periodically between January to May e.g (Aburuc, Oriny, Paroch, Kalegany payams). Since 2020, most swamps and tributaries remained full of water and caused displacements to some villages. The current flooding has been reported and observed since July 2021 where many villages are being deserted in Lul, Dethowk and Kodok rural payams where a total of 2246 households (13,476 individuals) were directly affected in Fashoda County; Dethowk 853 HH, Lul 721 HHs and Kodok rural 670 HHs. These households are displaced from their villages/homes and evacuated to other dry and high land in places near their area. The communities are facing challenges of putting up shelter with the continuity of rains and lack of access to materials which are not affordable to most of the affected population. The assessment team understood and observed the situation of the affected population lacking food, shelter, whereby the children, women and elderly people suffering from diseases such as malaria, diarrheal, typhoid and others. The floods have surrounded health and nutrition facilities which became inaccessible to the entire population especially in Lul Payam including WASH sanitation facilities filled with water and are not useful anymore.
