Situation overview
Between August and October 2020, there was a heavy rainfall that led to the overflow of the River Nile and other rivers caused flooding in Lul Payam, Kodok rural Payam, Dethwok Payam, Athidhwoy Payam and Kwoch Payam in Fashoda and Manyo counties, Upper Nile. Since then, the flooding has continued through November and December 2020 resulting to water to extend to all in-land areas in both Manyo and Fashoda counties causing displacement of people residing in these locations, livestock’s dying, house destroyed/submerged in and damages to their crops and properties.
Former Fashoda State Government call for assessment and Humanitarian organizations working in Fashoda County conducted 5 days multi-sector initial rapid needs assessments (IRNA) between January 21 and January 29 to assess the impact of flooding on affected people and identify their key immediate needs.
The number of affected persons in both Manyo and Fashoda counties is estimated at 10,704 people in six (6) mostly affected payams (Lul 2,880 individuals, Dethwok 2,022 individuals, Aburoc 270 individuals, Kodok 3,000 individuals, Athidhwoy 1,872 individuals and Kwoch 660 individuals and about 7,680 people (1,280 households) from Lul, Abanyay, Thur, Aweth, Nyiwut, Noon and Delal-ajak were displaced and evacuated their homes to new locations where they are facing challenges for putting up shelters.
The Team better understood that communities are badly affected with their Houses standing in the midst of water, their animals are dying, water blocked them from the areas they get their foods/access market and other Families/ household displaced already and lacking shelters and other facilities/WASH in the newly identified areas.
