South Sudan - escalating violence in Upper Nile (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, UNHCR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 20 March 2025)

  • On 19 March, in the town of Nasir in the Upper Nile State, governmental SSPDF airstrikes hit civilian areas including the hospital, increasing further the number of men, women and children injured or killed in the last few days.
  • This incident occurred amid increased fighting which has displaced some 84,000 people according to UNHCR (including to neighbouring Ethiopia) and is exacerbating the severe food insecurity and acute malnutrition situation. It is also hindering the response to the ongoing cholera outbreak (more than 40,000 cases and 694 deaths) that is raging in this part of the country.
  • The UN SRSG and UN RC/HC released statements expressing deep concern over the escalating violence, affecting the population and disrupting humanitarian operations in a context of limited security.
  • The escalation comes amid rising tensions between President Kiir and First VP Machar, putting the 2018 peace agreement (Revitalized Agreement on Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan) on the brink of collapse.
