South Sudan - Displacements from Sudan (DG ECHO, IOM, UNHCR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 22 January 2025)

  • This week marks a sad milestone of more than 1 million people displaced from Sudan to South Sudan, out of which half are children with critical humanitarian needs. Since April 2023 when an armed conflict broke out, Sudanese people and South Sudanese refugees have been fleeing war-ravaged Sudan. The arrivals have significantly increased in mid-December 2024 when fighting erupted along the border.
  • The influx of people strained already stretched capacities of South Sudan to provide basic services and protection to its own population. The country struggles with high food insecurity, non-functioning health and education systems, and recurring floods and outbreaks. The overpopulated camps and transit centers struggle with providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services. In this context cholera has been spreading since September 2024 infecting more than 23,147 and killing 462 people. The recent violence against the Sudanese has also impacted refugees.
  • In 2024, DG ECHO provided EUR 110 million for the overall humanitarian response in South Sudan, including EUR 33.7 million for the impact of Sudan crisis in the country.
