- Over 165,000 people have been forced to flee in the past three months due to the escalating crisis in South Sudan. There are at least 65,000 new internally displaced persons in Upper Nile State alone and nearly 100,000 new arrivals in neighbouring countries (Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda).
- Humanitarian partners are doing their best to respond to the needs of displaced populations but are struggling notably due to access constraints and limited resources. In Ethiopia, for instance, 35,000 people are estimated to have arrived in Gambella region and are in urgent need of multisectoral assistance. Administrative authorisation to access the refugees has only been granted very recently.
- On 4 June, UNHCR published a regional emergency appeal, seeking USD 36.25 million to support up to 343,000 forecasted internally displaced people in South Sudan (40,000) and refugees arriving in neighbouring countries over the next six months (148,000 refugees in Sudan, 50,000 in Ethiopia, 50,000 in Uganda, 30,000 in DRC and 25,000 in Kenya).
