THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN SOUTH SUDAN

South Sudan is facing a growing humanitarian crisis. Approximately 9 million people, or three out of four of the country’s population of 12.4 million, need humanitarian assistance. The outlook for the coming months is worrisome, with several factors compounding pre-existing vulnerabilities. This is as a result of the protracted humanitarian crisis, worsening food insecurity, the impact of the Sudan crisis on South Sudan, projected record levels of flooding during the rainy season, an unprecedented economic crisis and insufficient funding for humanitarian action. The 2024 South Sudan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) requires US$1.8 billion to reach 6 million vulnerable people with critical support. As of the end of August, the plan is funded at only 43 per cent.
