Enhancing the Capacity of Local and National NGOs in South Sudan

Introduction

CAFOD and Trocaire, in partnership, commenced the strengthening of the capacity and performance of local and national South Sudan humanitarian NGOs project, funded by the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SSHF).

In this fragile humanitarian context, local and national humanitarian NGOs (L/NNGOs) play a critical role in reaching vulnerable populations, often in areas inaccessible to international actors. However, despite their proximity and understanding of local contexts, these organizations frequently lack the institutional and technical capacities required to respond effectively and sustainably to humanitarian needs.

Strengthening the capacity of local and national humanitarian NGOs (L/NNGOs) is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic investment in a more effective, accountable, and locally-led humanitarian response. This article details the importance of capacity strengthening, key areas of focus, and recommended strategies for empowering South Sudan humanitarian organizations.

The project will target 100 Local and National NGOs, previously assessed by the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund, with a focus on strengthening the institutional, technical, financial, and programmatic capacities of local and national humanitarian NGOs (L/NNGOs) in South Sudan to enhance their ability to access funding and deliver quality humanitarian programs.
