One child has died and five others were injured by an mine in Bentiu – Unity State. The children, all boys aged between nine and fourteen years were playing with the abandoned explosive when it went off.
One of the children died on arrival at the hospital in Bentiu, one has been discharged and the other four are receiving treatment. The incident happened on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a sixteen year old boy sustained injuries when a grenade he was playing with exploded in Rubkona town. The head of UN children's organization UNICEF in South Sudan - Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque has announced that an emergency risk reduction exercise will be conducted in areas where militias have been active as a means of preventing such incidents from occurring. Ali Haque says more efforts will also be made to increase mine clearance in these high risk areas.
