Global Partnership for Education has allocated USD36 million for the implementation of a five-year general education strategic plan, an official has said.

The General Education Ministry's Undersecretary Deng Deng Hoc disclosed this in a consultative conference in Juba on Friday.

"The Global Partnership for Education has allocated USD36.1 million, Japan is going to add USD1 million, UNESCO has also pledged to give us USD 700,000.

"To implement the five year strategic plan, it will cost about SSP3.8 billion" he said.

Deng said the money will be used for capacity building, training of teachers, construction of more schools, printing text books and funding girl-child education programmes.

He also revealed that education is going to be compulsory for all children below 18 years, saying South Sudan is regarded as the most illiterate country in the world.
