South Africa - Severe weather (media, SAWS) (ECHO Daily Flash of 10 July 2024)

  • Heavy rainfall and strong winds have been affecting south-western South Africa, in particular the Cape town city area since 7 July, causing a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in population displacement and severe damage.
  • Media report, as of 10 July, approximately 4,000 displaced people and around 1,000 damaged houses across the area of Cape Town, where the worst affected is the Khayelitsha township.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is still forecasted over south-western South Africa, including the already affected area.
