South Africa – Severe Weather (ECHO Daily Flash of 6 March 2014)

Heavy rains affected north-eastern areas of South Africa in the last few days, causing floods and damage in parts of Mpumalanga. In the north-eastern city Nelspruit (Mpumalanga), approximatively 97 mm of rain in 24 hours were observed on 5 March.

According to local media (as of 5 March), at least three people were reported killed in Mpumalanga province (one in Greylingstad, one in Volksrust and another one in Amsterdam) and 100 households were reported displaced in different areas of Mpumalanga.

In the next 24 hours, heavy rains and thunderstorms may still affect north-eastern areas of South Africa.
