South Africa - Severe weather and floods (South African Weather Service, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 11 June 2025)

  • In recent days, heavy rainfall and snow have affected the eastern and southern provinces of South Africa, causing floods, casualties, and significant damage.
  • According to media reports, at least seven people have died - six in the city of Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province due to flooding, and one near the town of Tsolo, approximately 40 km northwest of Mthatha. An unknown number of people are reported missing following an incident in which a bus was swept away by floodwaters in the Eastern Cape.
  • On 11 June, moderate to locally heavy rain is expected across southeastern South Africa. Drier conditions are expected for 12 June.
