South Africa - Flash floods (Johannesburg Emergency Services, Weather South Africa, FloodList, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 5 December 2022)

  • On 3 December, flash floods were reported across Johannesburg City (Gauteng Province, north-eastern South Africa), resulting in casualties.

  • According to Johannesburg Emergency Services and media reports, 14 people died, and a number of individuals are missing along the Jukskei River in the Alexandra suburb of Johannesburg, as emergency teams continue with search and recovery operations. Several people have sustained injuries.

  • Moderate to locally heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is forecast on 5-6 December across Gauteng Province.
