Situation Update
- Approximately 4.4 million people in Somalia are projected to face severe hunger due to anticipated poor rainfall between October and December 2024. This situation is linked to a 70 percent likelihood of La Niña weather conditions, which threaten lives and livelihoods in Somalia and across the Eastern Horn of Africa. Somalia faces worsening food insecurity due to the lingering impacts of the April-May floods, ongoing armed conflict, and below average Gu season harvests. Additionally, 1.6 million children under five are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition between August 2024 and July 2025.
- In the face of increasing needs, funding challenges are hindering humanitarian actors including WFP, from delivering large-scale assistance. Three quarters into the year, Somalia’s Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan faces a significant funding gap of 60 percent. The cost of inaction is significant, impacting multiple sectors such as food, nutrition, and education. Humanitarian assistance has already been prioritized to maximize limited resources, but further funding constraints could disrupt the delivery of critical lifesaving assistance to the most vulnerable.
