COUNTRY STRATEGY

WFP’s assistance in Somalia has progressively shifted from years of exclusive emergency response to an expanded focus on recovery and resilience interventions. In January 2013, WFP launched the Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO) which targets up to 2.9 million vulnerable Somalis in food insecure areas with food, voucher and cash transfers over three years (2013-2015). Through the PRRO, WFP aims to enhance the resilience of vulnerable households and individuals to shocks; rebuild food and nutritional security for households by providing protective safety nets; and save lives through targeted relief interventions as seasonally and geographically appropriate. WFP currently operates from the Country Office in Mogadishu and the Liaison Office in Nairobi and maintains an extensive presence in Somalia through Area Offices in Galkayo, Hargeisa, Bossaso and Dolow, and sub-offices in Berbera, Garowe and Beletweyne. WFP also has staff in Kismayo, El Wak and Dhobley in southern Somalia.
