WFP is currently providing food and nutrition assistance to approximately 900,000 flood-affected people in the region. To continue this vital assistance, and scale it to the 2.2million people in need, WFP requires USD 110 million.
Key Highlights
• Approximately 4.6 million people are affected by floods in the region since the October-December rains started, including over 1.8 million displaced. Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are most affected, followed by South Sudan, Burundi and Uganda. Rains are expected to continue up to early 2024.
• WFP is responding across the region, meeting humanitarian needs stemming from the flooding. WFP is providing food and nutrition assistance to over 900,000 flood-affected people.
• In Somalia and Burundi, WFP provided anticipatory assistance to 230,000 people prior to the floods, including through cash transfers, in an innovative response that enabled people to protect their lives and assets before the shock.
• WFP is providing critical logistics services to governments and humanitarian partners, empowering emergency responders across all sectors.
