During week 52, 385 new suspected cases with one associated death were reported from 26 drought-affected districts of Somalia. The reduction in the number of new cases is linked to implementation of cholera response interventions in most affected districts (Table 1).

Since epidemiological week 1, 2022 a cumulative attack rate (CAR) of 365 cases per 100 000 population was reported. Daynile (2023 per 100,000 cases), Kahda (1090 per 100 000 cases) and Dharkenley (1074 per 100 000 cases) districts in Banadir have reported the highest CAR amongst all the affected districts (Table 2).

The overall case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.6% was reported from 26 drought-affected districts. However, in seven of these districts, the CFR exceeded the emergency threshold of ≥1% for emergency settings. These districts include Wanlaweyne (8.3%), Shibis (3.8%), Hawlwadag(1.4%) Daynile (1.3%), Afmadow (1.2%), Kahda (1.2%), and Kurtunwarey (1.1%)

Of the 2200 stool samples collected and analyzed, 279 (12.7%) samples tested positive for Vibrio cholerae 01 serotype Ogawa, 7(0.3%) samples were tested positive for Vibrio cholerae 01 Inaba in Daynile and 1(0.05%) sample positive for Vibrio cholerae 01 Hikojima in Marka.

Culture and sensitivity studies conducted in the national public health reference laboratory in Mogadishu showed that the V. cholera serotypes isolate is sensitive to chloramphenicol and tetracycline but resistant to ampicillin and nalidixic acid.
