Highlights
- Somalia remains heavily affected by multiple climate related hazards; an issue further compounded by ongoing conflicts. In July, an estimated 42,000 people were displaced due to inter-clan conflict in the Luuq area of the Gedo region.
- In 2024, 17,246 cholera cases have been reported, women and children under five comprise 51 per cent and 59 per cent respectively.
- During the reported period, UNICEF provided hygiene promotion messages and kits to 184,244 people, chlorinated 680 water sources in high-risk districts, protecting roughly 350,000 people against acute watery diarrhoea /cholera.
- In July 2024, UNICEF treated 38,485 children under five (21,903 girls and 16,582 boys) for severe wasting and vaccinated 5,221 children against measles.
- In 2024, 68,676 children, including 31,775 girls, across twelve disaster-affected districts, are being provided access to learning at 160 different locations.
- Under UNICEF's eight-pillar aid diversion prevention plan, the digitalization of beneficiary registration and the Last Mile Supply Monitoring (LMSM) tool is ongoing with the training of 146 participants on LMSM from 23 partners in two states recently completed.
- UNICEF's 2024 humanitarian appeal for children is currently underfunded, with only 37 per cent of the funds accrued. The lack of sufficient funding is posing a significant challenge to delivering critical lifesaving services.
