Background

Over the past week, drought conditions have significantly deteriorated in Jariiban District, Mudug Region, triggering the displacement of approximately 1,195 households (around 7,170 individuals) from rural villages. The displacement has been driven by acute water shortages, depletion of pasture, loss of livestock, and the collapse of traditional livelihoods.

The most severely affected areas include Raxanreeb, Raydable Caracaso, Hayaan, and Garacad villages. Affected populations have primarily relocated to the rural areas of Qoorgooye and Shilinxaraare, placing additional pressure on already overstretched resources and basic services in the receiving communities.

The long-distance movements resulting from the drought have significantly heightened protection risks particularly to the vulnerable groups particularly children, women, elderly persons, and persons with disabilities. The Protection and Solutions Monitoring Network observed approximately 1,300 children and 51 persons with disabilities (mainly physical disabilities) among the displaced population.
