Situational Overview
Between 30 June and 2 July, a fight occurred, driven by resource competition between two clans, Sheekhaal and Dir, in Buq-qalooc, near Tawfiq in the Jariiban district of the Mugud region, bordering the Puntland and Galmudug States. The conflict lasted three days, resulting in the displacement of residents from the affected areas. There have been deaths among the fighting militias. While there have been no reports of civilian deaths, 15 civilians have been reportedly injured.
The villages between the Puntland and Galmudug administrations of Buq-qalooc and Tawfiq were the most impacted, with 485 households displaced due to the clan conflict. Displaced individuals are in open areas without proper shelter, facing protection vulnerabilities and risks. They sought refuge in nearby areas such as Tuuroboore, Lihlow-dheere, Afbarwaqo, and Qoryowyen in Jariiban District. The cessation of all small businesses and transportation in and out of these villages has severely affected their livelihoods. The fighting has also disrupted health centers and Quranic schools. Vulnerable groups, including children, women, and the elderly, are particularly at high risk.
