Special envoy hails regional efforts to stabilize Somalia

The top UN envoy for Somalia on Thursday welcomed ongoing regional efforts aimed at bringing the Transitional Federal Government and the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia together under the framework of the peace agreement signed in Djibouti two months ago.

Special envoy Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah also hailed the continued commitment of the Parties to making the Agreement work pointing to the strong focus by the sub-region on work carried out by the parties to strengthen the conditions for stability in Somalia.Ould-Abdallah said the joint Security Committee, made up of representatives from both sides, has been meeting in South Africa for the past week to discus and plan for the next round of meetings.

He also announced that the UN and the World Bank are organizing an international donors' conference in 2009 to raise resources for a one-year recovery programme in Somalia.
