Somalia context and cholera risk factors
Somalia is cholera endemic –uninterrupted transmission since 2016/17
- Cholera outbreaks coincide with Gu (April-June) and Dyer (October-Dec) rains
- High risk districts are in the river basin
- Sometimes due to overlaps in seasons transmission is protracted
Risks/Vulnerabilities:
- Low access to safe water
- High levels of open defection
- High levels of malnutrition among children-lowered immunity
- Mobile populations in and neighboring countries-with Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen
- Limited access to PHC due to multiple factors
- Insecurity limiting access
