Somalia context and cholera risk factors

Somalia is cholera endemic –uninterrupted transmission since 2016/17

  • Cholera outbreaks coincide with Gu (April-June) and Dyer (October-Dec) rains
  • High risk districts are in the river basin
  • Sometimes due to overlaps in seasons transmission is protracted

Risks/Vulnerabilities:

  • Low access to safe water
  • High levels of open defection
  • High levels of malnutrition among children-lowered immunity
  • Mobile populations in and neighboring countries-with Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen
  • Limited access to PHC due to multiple factors
  • Insecurity limiting access
