Key Overall Developments

Conflict and displacement

Mogadishu

The humanitarian situation in Mogadishu remains worrying. On 2 and 3 March, an estimated 35 people were killed, and at least 60 others were wounded and admitted in hospital in clashes between the Transitional Federal Government and insurgents, concentrated mainly in Mogadishu's Hodan, Wardhiigleey, Hawl Wadaag and Waaberi districts. UNHCR reports that around 25,900 people have been displaced from the city since 1 February. Of these, some 6,300 have been displaced within Mogadishu while 11,630 have fled to the Afgooye Corridor.

UNHCR Kenya continues to register new refugees from Somalia. Since 1 January, 8,421 people have been registered. This week, around 900 Somali refugees were registered entering Kenya. Although Dadaab refugee camps in North-Eastern Kenya have yet to observe a significant increase in the rate of new arrivals, continued reports of increased insecurity along the Kenya/Somalia border, caused by fighting between Kenya government forces and insurgents, have been received.

Inter-clan fighting in Galgaduud region

On 5 March, at least 14 people died and many others injured when two clans clashed in Amara village, 90 km north of Xarardheere town. The dispute was over land ownership. Tensions remain high in the area.
