Incident involving humanitarian organisation
On 15 June, Al Shabaab forces took over Belet Weyne town from Hizbul Islam and entered the International Medical Corps (IMC) offices, disarmed the guards, searched through files and looted equipment. The compound remains occupied. In 2008, IMC was banned from working in areas under Al Shabaab control in South Central regions of Somalia.
The IMC's activities in health, nutrition and water sanitation & hygiene have been adversely affected by this incident in and around Belet Weyne. The organization runs two Mother and Child Health centers, a maternity hospital and 25 village health posts. Operations in 16 Out-patient Therapeutic Programme centers benefiting approximately 500 beneficiaries per month, water chlorination, construction of latrines and promotion of hygiene activities reaching 10,000 people have also been affected.
High malnutrition levels in Lower Juba
The number of children suffering from malnutrition in Marere hospital in Lower Juba region has increased two-fold with 1,975 children admitted between January and May 2010, compared to the same period last year. According to an update released on 17 June by an international medical NGO working
