Overview
Large parts of the country are experiencing critical water shortages with much of the Jubaland state, Southwest state, large parts of Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Puntland and eastern regions of Somaliland being the worst hit areas. The current water shortage is likely to deepen humanitarian crisis in the coming months particularly in areas facing critical water shortages where their main sources (shallow wells and Berkad) are dried-up resulting a sharp increase in water prices. Water prices in rural areas have steadily increased over the past two weeks in areas such as Marka, Barawe, Qoryoley & Walaweyn. Similarly, increased water prices have also reported in lower Juba, Gedo, Hobyo, Jariiban, Burhakaba and Ceel Berde districts. This is attributed by the depressed precipitations received in these areas during the short rains of Deyr and depletion of shallow wells, high operation cost and long distance. Limited access to sanitation facilities in IDP camps was also reported in several districts mainly in Baidoa, Garowe, kismayo, Galkaacyo and Mogadishu and led to high open defecation within the IDP camps.
