Overview
The impact of El Niño-induced heavy rains and flooding during the long (Gu) rainy season (March-June) have been devastating several regions of Somalia. According to UNOCHA, heavy rains and flooding affected nearly 127,000 people in Somalia and further displacing 8,376 people. The heavy rains and floods have also damaged infrastructure and diminished access to water and sanitation services while increasing the risk of diseases such as cholera. Weather forecasts indicate heavy rainfall of more than 200 mm, is expected over some parts of Galmudug and Puntland states of Somalia.
Somalia is also grappling with cholera outbreak with cases rapidly spreading across the country with 8,681 cases recorded since the beginning of the year. The ongoing Cholera/AWD outbreak in Somalia is mainly attributed to a growing number of people with limited access to safe water and adequate sanitation facilities. Humanitarian partners pre-positioned supplies in the 22 hotspot districts to meet the needs of 770,000 people prone to flooding.
